I want to do it / I want to try it|たいです・てみたいです

Both phrases express a wish. 〜てみたい adds the idea of trying an activity or experience. Compare a wish to do something with a wish to try doing it, then make a sentence about your own interests.

『したいです』と『してみたいです』は、どちらも自分じぶんの希望きぼうを言いいます。『してみたいです』には、試ためしたい気持きもちがあります。

A fictional everyday scene for practising this lesson

Say what you want to do

Use the verb stem before ます + たいです: 作りつくります → 作りつくりたいです. This presents your wish to do the action. It does not, by itself, say that you are trying it as an experiment.

『作つくります』の『ます』を『たいです』に変かえると、『作つくりたいです』になります。自分じぶんの希望きぼうです。

Add the idea of trying

Use the te-form + みたいです: 作っつくってみたいです. You would like to try making something. The Japan Foundation's Irodori introduces this pattern for a new activity a learner would like to try.

『作つくってみたいです』は、作つくることを試ためしたいときに使つかいます。新あたらしいことに興味きょうみがあるときにも使つかえます。

Do not confuse this みたい with 'looks like'

In 食べたべてみたい, the te-form 食べたべて comes before みたい. In this lesson, the phrase means 'want to try eating.' Learn the whole verb pattern rather than translating みたい on its own.

『食たべてみたい』は、『食たべて』と『みたい』を一緒いっしょに見みます。この課かでは、『試ためしに食たべたい』という意味いみです。

Turn a wish into a question about an activity

In a conversation about a class, 参加さんかしてみたいんですが… can introduce your wish and invite the other person to give information. This is a useful next step after practising 参加さんかしてみたいです.
