A fictional everyday scene for practising this lesson

もらいます: the receiver's viewpoint

I received a book from a friend. 私わたし is the receiver, 友達ともだち is the giver, and 本ほん is the thing. に marks the person you received it from; から is also possible in this pattern.

くれます: someone gives to me

In 友達ともだちが本ほんをくれました, the friend is the giver. The gift comes to the speaker. 私わたしに can be omitted when that destination is clear. This lesson practises gifts to the speaker, rather than every possible giving relationship.

Change the viewpoint, not the gift

In the first sentence I receive; in the second Mina gives to me. The person before に in the first pattern is not the receiver.

Use the past forms for a gift you received

When someone asks who gave you an item, you can answer with the giver + が + くれました. When you describe receiving it, use the receiver's viewpoint.
