Habits & Decisions: you-ni suru vs koto-ni suru|〜

When talking about our lifestyle choices, goals, and resolutions, Japanese distinguishes between continuous effort and decisive resolve. Use 〜ようにする (commonly 〜ようにしている) to express conscious, mindful efforts toward building a habit or avoiding a pitfall. Use 〜ことにする (commonly 〜ことにしました) to announce a definite, concrete decision or life resolution made at a specific point in time.

Conscious habits and ongoing efforts: 〜

Attaching ようにする to a plain-form verb (dictionary form or nai-form) expresses mindful continuous practice: "make an effort to / try to ensure that." In the continuous form 〜ようにしている, it highlights an active routine: 毎朝まいあさ野菜やさいを食たべるようにしています (I make it a rule to eat vegetables every morning).

Definite decisions and life resolutions: 〜

Attaching ことにする to a plain-form verb marks a firm, definitive personal decision: "I have decided to do ~." It pinpoints the resolution itself: (I have decided to join a gym starting next month).

Negative patterns: Avoiding bad habits vs Choosing not to act

Attach ようにする to the nai-form to express a healthy avoidance habit: 夜更よふかししないようにしている (I try to avoid staying up late). Attach ことにする to the nai-form to describe choosing not to take part: 会議かいぎには出席しゅっせきしないことにしました (I decided not to attend the meeting).

Habitual effort vs Decisive choice

Use 〜ようにしている for the gradual marathon of daily healthy routines. Use 〜ことにしました for the milestone moment of choosing a new path.
