「てもいいですか」と「てください」——だれがしますか? / Asking permission or making a request
“May I use it?” and “Please use it” ask for different things. Identify who will do the action before choosing a Japanese expression.
自分が しても いいか 聞くときは、「〜てもいいですか」を 使います。相手に 何かを してほしいときには、「〜てください」が 使えます。この 練習では、だれが 動くかを はっきり 書きます。

Words to read first
| Japanese / reading | Romaji | English |
|---|---|---|
| 自分 | jibun | oneself; here, the speaker |
| 相手 | aite | the other person |
| 使います | tsukaimasu | use |
| 書きます | kakimasu | write |
| 見せます | misemasu | show |
| 許可 | kyoka | permission |
First ask: who will do it?
| Intention | Japanese | English |
|---|---|---|
| You want permission to use a pen yourself. | この ペンを 使ってもいいですか。 | May I use this pen? |
| You want the other person to use a pen. | この ペンを 使ってください。 | Please use this pen. |
「〜てもいいですか」と 質問しただけでは、許可を もらったことには なりません。返事を 聞きます。「〜てください」は、丁寧な 形でも、場面によって 強い 指示に 聞こえることが あります。どんな 相手にも 一番よい 頼み方、という 意味では ありません。
Asking permission is not the same as receiving it. Listen to the answer. Although てください has a polite form, it can sound directive in some relationships; it is not automatically the best request in every situation.

First identify the person performing the action. These are basic speaker-permission and listener-request examples, not a rule that determines every subject regardless of context.
