Reading a Neighborhood Notice (Kairanban) in Japanese: Find the Date, Place, and What to Bring

Neighborhood associations (町会・自治会, chōkai / jichikai) share notices about events, cleaning days, and disaster drills. A clipboard of notices passed from house to house is called 回覧板 (kairanban). This page helps you find the key information in a notice.

Joining a neighborhood association in Shinjuku

In Shinjuku City, you can apply to join a 町会・自治会 online from the city’s list page. For questions by phone, contact your local branch office (特別出張所) or the Community Section (地域コミュニティ課, 03-5273-4127).
