Must Do vs Don't Have To|〜なければならない・〜なくてもいい

Living and working in Japan requires knowing rules, obligations, and exemptions clearly. Use 〜なければならない (must do / have to) to express strict duties, official requirements, or unavoidable appointments. Use 〜なくてもいい (do not have to) to explain exemptions, permissions, or that something is completely optional.

Expressing obligation: 〜

Convert a verb to its negative form, drop ない, and attach なければならない (or polite 〜なければなりません). It indicates an action that must be done regardless of your personal preference, such as paying bills, meeting deadlines, or office regulations.

Expressing lack of obligation: 〜

Convert a verb to its negative form, drop ない, and attach なくてもいい (or polite 〜なくてもいいです). This reassures the listener that the action is not required; there is no penalty if skipped.

Explaining reasons with 〜んです

In workplace conversations, when giving a reason for leaving early or taking leave, Japanese speakers frequently append (I have to go to the city office).

Everyday conversational forms

In casual speech between close colleagues or friends, 〜なければならない is often shortened to 〜なきゃ (e.g. 帰かえらなきゃ = I've got to head home).
