Already done” or “not yet”?
“Not yet” can mean that a task is still in progress, not just that it has not started. Use a progress table to answer questions about what has been completed.

Words to read first
| Japanese / reading | Romaji | English |
|---|---|---|
| もう | mō | already; in this lesson, completed by now |
| まだです | mada desu | not yet, in reply to a completion question |
| 終わります | owarimasu | finish; come to an end |
| 途中 | tochū | partway through |
Look at completion, not just the first step
| Situation | Answer to “Have you finished writing?” |
|---|---|
All of it is written. / Yes, I have already written it. |
Some is written, but there is more to do. / No, not yet. |
Writing has not started. / No, not yet. |
“Not yet” alone does not tell you whether the task has started. Add a short explanation if that distinction matters.

Review
The lesson practises completion. In other contexts, まだあります means “there is still some,” while もうありません means “there is none left.” Do not translate every もう as “already.”
