"Many" in Japanese is たくさん (takusan) or 多い (ōi). For many people, 大勢 (ōzei) is common.

How to use it
多い usually comes at the end: 人が多いです (there are many people). Before a noun, use 多くの (ōku no).
"How many?" is いくつ (things) or 何人 (people).

What is the difference between たくさん and 多い?
たくさん (takusan) is used before verbs or with の: たくさん食べる, たくさんの人. 多い (ōi) usually ends a sentence: 人が多い.
How do you ask "how many people" in Japanese?
Ask 何人ですか (nannin desu ka). At a restaurant, staff ask 何名様ですか.
