Reading Japanese Food Labels: Date, Storage and After Opening
A date is only one part of a food label. Practise finding the storage instructions and the words for before and after opening. You do not need to decide whether any real food is safe to eat.
食品の ラベルには、日付と 保存方法が あります。開ける 前と 後の 注意を 読みましょう。

Fictional practice material made for this lesson. It is not an actual product label, shop slip or facility notice. Use only this sample to answer Q1–Q4.
A — れんしゅうジャム
| 賞味期限 | 2026年11月30日 |
| 保存方法(未開封) | 直射日光を 避け、常温で 保存 |

Q1. Aの 賞味期限は いつですか。
What date is printed as the best-before date on A?
Q1 — Answer and how to find it
2026年11月30日です。
Find 賞味期限 in A, then read the date in the same row. This is a reading answer, not permission to eat the food.
Q2. Aを 開けた 後は、どこに 置きますか。
Where does A say to keep it after opening?
Q2 — Answer and how to find it
冷蔵庫です。
Find 開封後, then 要冷蔵. The room-temperature instruction belongs to 未開封 (unopened).
Q3. Bの 保存温度は 何度以下ですか。
What is the maximum storage temperature printed on B?
Q3 — Answer and how to find it
10℃以下です。
Read 保存方法, then 10℃以下. 以下 includes 10°C; it does not mean above 10°C.
Q4. Aの「早めに」は、何日と 書いて ありますか。
Does A give an exact number of days after opening?
Q4 — Answer and how to find it
日数は 書いて ありません。
Read the entire 開封後 row. 早めに says soon, but gives no number. Do not invent three or seven days.
Phrases to use
Read aloud or show the Japanese sentence.
開封後は 冷蔵庫に 入れますか。
Should I keep it in the fridge after opening?
保存方法を 教えて ください。
Please explain how to store it.
Review
Cover the English meanings. Find three Japanese words in the sample and say which field or condition each word helps you read. Then answer Q1–Q4 again without opening the answers.
Real-world reference
Real-label point: both expiry and best-before dates assume unopened food kept as instructed. After opening, the printed date alone cannot tell you that food is safe. Follow the actual product instructions; no universal number of safe days is taught here.
食品は、開ける 前と 後で 保存方法が 違う ことが あります。
開けた 後は、日付だけで 食べられるか 決めません。
